 REVIEW

An Absorbing, Thought-Provoking and Heart-Wrenching Coming-Of-Age Story

Whatever flaws we might identify or frustrations we might feel are trivial in comparison to a reader’s pure joy in losing himself/herself in a narrative. When all the elements come together: an intriguing plot, thoughtful, profound themes, complex, troubling, characters, and language that make us shudder for its honesty, clarity, and confidence; we gratefully set all analysis aside and give ourselves up to the sheer magic of a great book. And for me, Being Exposed, is such a book.

Author Mae Worthington weaves an intense tale of raw teenage emotion, with intriguing twists and turns that easily captivates the reader’s attention from the beginning. The story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book.

The book description gives a sneek preview; ‘Garrett tried to hide that he was gay—only his best friends knew—but when his secret comes out, so do his biggest fears and threats. Coming out has made Garrett a target, and when he’s attacked on a weekend trip, he must explore how to deal with his latest fate.

Being Exposed tells the stories of three different friends dealing with the decision to reveal themselves and brave the potential consequences of being bullied or being able to find another way.’

Now, if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages yourself to find out!

There’s no doubt that Being Exposed is an exceptionally well written book that encapsulates the confusion and struggle of the teenage years. However, it must be said, that this story is not for the faint-hearted. The author’s script can be razor-sharp at times and will cut deep into the emotions of its reader. It’s a masterclass on how a book should actually be written. The dynamics of how character and conflict intersect is skillfully crafted. It’s provocative, intense, and emotionally charged.

No matter whether you traverse its choppy waves successfully or not, the teenage journey – let alone the coming out process – brings with it confusion and complexity. However, the laws of nature tell us that, once you’ve weathered the storm, the sun must come out to shine sooner or later. And that’s well worth keeping in mind for all those who are on that journey.

This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a fascinating and thought-provoking journey.

It’s one of those books that come along once in awhile that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader. I will say, however, that fans of the Young Adult/Coming of Age genre will love having a nibble on this one!

If this book is anything to go by, I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Mae Worthington in the future. I would definitely recommend this book. I would even go so far as to say that this coming-of-age novel would benefit from a sympathetic Hollywood treatment! Five stars from me.
