Top 10 Popular Science Books

1. Annals of a Former World, by John McPhee In patient, lyrical prose, McPhee takes the reader on a geologic journey through the United States. This volume was originally published as 4 books; each is centered on a road trip the author took with a geologist, observing the earth next to Eisenhower’s great US highways for clues into its geologic past. Annals has this–no borders, idealistic, On the Road for geologists kind of feel (though a bit more grown-up.) I pick up Annals every once in a while when im in a relaxed mood, when im looking for a good example of literary science writing. Highly recommended as a companion for camping trips, if you can fit it into your pack. 2. Surely You’re Joking, Mr, Feynman, by Richard Feynman A string of excerpts from Feynman’s life/career, Surely You’re Joking is probably the popular science book I have read through the most times, not because it is short, but because it is at once compelling, understated, and full of indispensable scientific concepts. Richard Feynman has an uncanny ability to make physics easily digestible, his lectures are a testament to that and Surely You’re Joking is no exception. Feynman’s easy prose…

There are many benefits to children books. A child that reads has a better shot or a higher chance at getting good grades in school than a child who doesn’t. Children’s books exposes our children to the world of books. A world where anything is possible. It is in this world that children learn to have fun while reading. When a child is having fun, it is highly likely that he will keep doing the thing that he is having fun with. Children books contain a lot of knowledge and facts. They are not just stories. They contain information about the world we live in. They contain facts about animals, information about musical instruments and information about the society we live in today. One of the best children story books I’ve ever read was “D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths”. This book is about various stories and various heroes in Greece. In is about myths and mythological creatures. You can learn a lot of things about Greeks, and the famous Greek mythologies through this book. It is a great source of adventure, fun and excitement for kids. Even adults can enjoy this particular book. If you haven’t read it, it is…

What do you know about science? Would you like to know more? Would you like your children to grow up with a background of science knowledge? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then let me recommend a very good book for you: “The Scientist – Life Science Library Series” by Henry Margenau, David Bergamini and the Editors of Time Life Books – 1964. This book is jammed packed with information and historical scientific pictures including the cover which features James D. Watson, the co-discoverer and Nobel Prize winner for his work in DNA. Indeed, even with all the pictures this work is quite serious and the introduction is written by the former President of the National Academy of Sciences, Frederick Seitz. The book has chapters on Human Beings and Biological Symmetry, the instruements that help us give science meaning, method and accuracy, explanation of the scientific method, the various areas of science in an ever expanding tree, communication in science, futuristic predictions based on science and the impact science has made on civilization, society and the future of humankind. This educational science book takes us from before there was consensus of the world being round to the…
