What if the Europeans who came to North America three hundred years ago had been susceptible to epidemics, but the 500 Indigenous nations’ people were not? This is the alternate history world of The Finest Mask, where disease has disfigured nearly all of Europe’s population. Sometime in the future, the people have become accustomed to wearing masks to conceal their scars. Gene hunter, scientist Sir William Potter travels from London to New York City in search of an illusive gene for perfect skin, a gene to prevent the ravages of infections and the disfiguring scars. A masterclass in story telling

By Piaras on October 18, 2018 (Emerald Book Reviews)

Author J.J. Brown weaves a unique and fascinating sci-fi fantasy tale, with intriguing twists and turns that will easily captivate the reader’s attention from the beginning. The author paints a dystopian diseased-ridden society in a very vivid and convincing way. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction. It’s a fascinating short story that will keep you engaged from the first page to the last.

The story had every element a good story should have. A thought-provoking plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good read.

It is my contention that not only is this a great work of speculative fiction, but it is also an interesting philosophical thought on just how much we are willing to endure in the future. A highly recommended read, and a well-deserved five stars from me.
