What do you do when you wake up one day, at the peak of your life, and your world shattered to pieces?
Diana, a therapist, and spiritual teacher is married to David, a pediatrician. One morning at dawn, her best hours of inspiration, the shadow of fear emerged out of nowhere.
Just when she has started to feel that she reached the peak of her self-fulfillment, through her workshops, lectures and therapy sessions, tragedy hits her life – her husband wakes up complaining of acute abdomen pain. What he believed to be a routine case of appendicitis, was diagnosed as stage 4, colon cancer.
In an instant, the world of the couple and their three children is turned upside down.
Diana believes the disease is an opportunity for betterment, through positive thinking and the construction of change mechanism as powerful fighting forces. Together with her children, they care for David with devotion and love. Diana does not let go and does not give up.
We Must Be Strong tells the story of a brave woman who chooses life and does everything in her power to drive her husband to follow the same path. With honest, intimate, gripping, and unpretentious writing, Hayuta Epstein spins out a touching, authentic plot, based on the story of her life. A story that reveals to the reader how her heroine confronts her fears and the fear of her loved ones, while all along providing her husband support and energy through therapy, and guides him to self-work, with the goal of changing his way of thinking. The book is a testimony to a life of triumph, with faith and positive thinking as healing tools.
‘We must never show fear that it’s stronger than us.’

The diagnosis of cancer for anyone is devastating. When we first hear the word ‘cancer’ we are in shock and disbelief. We feel we have just been handed a death sentence. Surviving is a strong instinct in human beings, and we have the potential to overcome many challenges, beat incredible odds, and come out a survivor. With the proper attitude anything is possible. Sadly, many of us accept the diagnoses and prescribed treatment of our disease without seeking additional forms of life-saving medicines or treatments.
We Must Be Strong by Hayuta Epstien is based on the life story of the author. To paraphrase part of the introduction, the author movingly and honestly states that she wrote this book to air out her feelings so that she would remain sane during difficult times and moments of emotional breakdown. She has always been the pillar of the house, but this time she had to stay even stronger and keep from falling apart. Through writing, she found a way to vent her feelings and release all the emotions that were bottled up inside her. A major part of the book was written on her mobile phone while she sent herself emails containing her feelings and experiences. The book was written in real-time. It was her life and their life as a family at that point in time. They were all committed to the task of keeping their spirits up and not break down. The moments of loneliness were extremely difficult. Writing became her therapy, and into it, she sifted all her feelings, her frustration, and her anger until she was relieved. Writing also helped her understand the enormity of the blow to their lives as a family, to understand why they had to experience this disease and what they had to do to eradicate it.
No matter what your situation is today, this book will put you on the right path to better things. For those looking for inspiration and encouragement in the face of serious issues, this book will help you to clarify your thinking, process your feelings, and make better decisions. The author has put her heart in the pages of this book and will encourage and give hope to the reader as she writes about an incredibly personal journey about herself, her husband and her family.
The book is also filled with wise and healing words such as: ‘Life is a wonderful combination of difficult experiences that are paradoxically intertwined with experiences of happiness in our lives. The difficult experiences are usually surprising, and we will never be ready for them. However, they make us resilient and make us appreciate what is there. Therefore, even with difficulty, one must not forget to be grateful. Because showing gratitude is a source of power that connects great faith and hope.’
We Must Be Strong is a wonderful read that will leave you feeling like a better person for having read it. It’s an impressive work by author Hayuta Epstien and I’ll be looking forward to reading more from her in the future. I would highly recommend this sensitive and insightful read. A well-deserved five stars from me.
